Brown Butter Apple Crisp

September 9, 2013 |

Last fall my friend hosted a comfort food dinner party and I decided to "bring" my favorite fall dessert – apple crisp!

This is seriously the best apple crisp ever!

When making this, you'll probably want to double it. I almost doubled the recipe for you and made that the recipe, but I worried you wouldn't give it a chance if you saw two sticks of butter in the ingredients. Butter is healthy, right? 😉

ingredients:

apple filling:

- 4-6 medium apples, sliced and chopped
- 3 T butter
- a few dashes of cinnamon

crumble topping:

- 1 stick butter, softened
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup old-fashioned oats
- ½ cup flour

make it:

1.) Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2.) Add your 3 tablespoons of butter to a cast iron pan, melt until slightly brown and bubbly. Add chopped apples, sprinkle with cinnamon, and cook until slightly soft.
3.) In a large bowl, make your topping. Mix softened butter, brown sugar, oats, and flour with your hands until the topping starts to form small clumps.

4.) When your apples are soft-ish and look yummy, sprinkle the topping on top of the apples until covered.
5.) Stop a few times and eat the butter/oat/brown sugar clumps (very important).
6 .) Bake at 350 degrees for an hour.

Your crisp is done with the topping looks golden brown and slightly crunchy. Cinnamon and brown sugar and oatmeal and mmmmmm. Every time we have it, it takes me back to fall. Apple picking, hay rides, cozy sweaters, cute boots… I love fall!

You are so right! I would have cringed at the two sticks of butter. But come to think of it, I would probably double the recipe as well. So strange how our minds work!

That looks yummy, but I can't wait to make your butternut-yam-chicken-apple-deliciousness soup from a couple years ago!! It's my favorite for fall and my whole family loves it!!! 🙂

Oh my yum! This is one of my favorite desserts. I just realized I have yet to introduce my kids - better get on that, and I will have to try out your recipe!

Yum! I'm making this very soon. And yes, butter is good for you, just like bacon grease. 🙂
